Woven Wool

This is a piece of fabric I made in 2013. It is hand-woven from this beautiful variegated wool that I found in the haberdashery on the top floor of House of Fraser in Birmingham City Centre. It was crafted on a cardboard loom, which I also cut myself. I remembered the technique from an afternoon of weaving with paper and fabric scraps in Year 3.

I’ve always been a DIY person. If there is something that I’ve wanted to do, I have taught myself, through books, tv programmes, written online and video tutorials, and observing others.

This piece is incredibly special to me. Not only am I so proud of how it turned out, but every time I see and spend time with it, it reminds me of the kind of life I want to have, and to continue creating.

I will be making more woven pieces, and refining my craft and technique. I am very much looking forward to it.
